Small Dog Parks in NYC

dog parksNot all pugs are created equal. While some of our short nosed friends love to play with dogs of all sizes, others are more inclined to mingle with short statured pupmates.

Luckily for them, NYC offers a handful of small dog parks, open to dogs 25lbs and under for quality off leash hang time. They’re perfect for socializing with other small sized canines, and a great option for our furry friends who can’t run with the big dogs.

1. Robin Kovary Run for Small Dogs

Named after a dog trainer and pet therapist who died of breast cancer in 1991, the Robin Kovary Run for Small Dogs is run by the Washington Square Park Dog Run Association, Inc, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The organization has a website, newsletter, and social media pages. The dog run is specifically designed for small dogs, complete with great fencing, a water fountain, and shady areas.

2. Carl Schurz Small Dog Run
E End Ave and 86th St
New York, NY 10079

Overlooking the East River, this dog run includes benches for owners, poop bags, and a washing station. The ground is concrete and elevated, with a picturesque view of the river.

3. De Witt Clinton Dog Run
W 52nd St and 11th Ave
New York, NY 10019

This Hell’s Kitchen jaunt is the place to be in the summer. There are kiddie pools for small dogs to play in, a double gated entrance, and plenty of benches with shade. The floor is asphalt, so there is no dust, and there’s always a hose available to cool off panting pooches.

4. 87th Street Dog Run
W 87th at Riverside Dr
New York, NY 10024

Complete with double gate security, this dog park has a dirt and gravel floor and plenty of benches with shade. The dog run has a facebook group, to stay up to date on happenings in the neighborhood, and is run by a core group of dog owners meet regularly to discuss maintenance, fundraising, and to organize community events.

5. 105th St Dog Run
105th St and Riverside Dr
New York, NY 10025

This dog run is surrounded by trees, with a cafe in front that serves cold drinks and food. In the summer the cafe hosts live music, giving your dogs game of fetch a soundtrack. Beware: the dog park floor is made of sand and gravel, so it can get dusty.

6. 72nd Street Dog Run
W 72nd St Riverside Dr
New York, NY 10023

This dog run was opened in November 2004 through the efforts of FLORAL (Friends & Lovers Of Riverside Area Life), an upper west side dog owner and park advocacy volunteer group. FLORAL exclusively sponsors and maintains the 72nd Street Dog Run.
